Meningitis is a serious infection that causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The most common form of bacterial meningitis in the UK is caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B. It can lead to septicaemia (blood poisoning) and can become life-threatening very quickly, even in otherwise healthy individuals. The meningitis vaccine provides targeted protection against this most prevalent strain.
The infection can affect anyone, but it is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults. Early vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk of serious illness. International patients and travellers to high-risk regions should also consider vaccination.
Meningococcal bacteria are spread through close contact such as coughing, sneezing and kissing. Seeking urgent medical attention at the first sign of symptoms is critical.

About the Vaccine
The Meningitis B Vaccine (Bexsero)
The Meningitis B vaccine (Bexsero) is a safe and effective vaccine specifically designed to protect against meningococcal group B bacteria — the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK. It does not contain live bacteria and cannot cause meningitis.
The vaccine is approved for use from two months of age and is available privately at any age. It is included in the NHS childhood immunisation schedule for babies, but older children, teenagers, and adults may not be routinely offered it and can access it through our private vaccination service.
